Olentangy Swim Association (OSA) is proud to offer many
new and improved opportunities for swimmers ages 6 months through adult, in all areas of swim progress, to continue to grow and build their skills and be safe in and around the water.

Weekday morning and evening sessions are Monday through Thursday for 2 consecutive weeks. Each class is 30 minutes.  

Class Fees

OSA Members: $75.00 per child per session

Non-members: $85.00 per child per session
Private Lessons: $25 per 30 minute lesson


Course Descriptions

Program: SWIM WITH ME – Child/Parent

Class Name: Swim With Me

Age: For ages 6 months – 3 years (with an adult present in the water)

Description: Introduction for children, accompanied by an adult, to gain familiarity and comfort while exploring the water.

Details: Children learn swim readiness skills by getting head and body wet, splashing, and blowing bubbles. Adults learn the importance of supervising in an aquatics setting and how to support their child while in the water through appropriate teaching methods.

Prerequisites: All children must be accompanied by an adult who is comfortable entering/exiting the water without assistance and be willing to put face/eyes under water.

Program: PRESCHOOL

Class Name: Preschool 1 (age 3-5)

Age: Age 3 – Kindergarten (Fall start)

Description: Introducing swimmers to water and fundamental safety and water exploration.

Details: Gives new swimmers the opportunity to become acclimated and comfortable in the water without a parent. Introduces basic self-rescue skills, blowing bubbles, floating, glides, and safe water exploration.

Prerequisite: Child must be potty trained and willing to work in the water without a parent. Also, must be willing to enter/exit the water voluntarily and allow body and head to get wet.

Class Name: Preschool 2 (age 3-5)

Age: 3 thru Kindergarten (Fall start)

Description: Using skills learned in Preschool 1, children progress towards being more independent in the water. More focus on breath control skills; floats, and forward locomotion are introduced.

Details: Children practice going under water and retrieving toys, getting to the wall/ladder safely, and perfecting floats/glides and other aquatic safety skills.

Prerequisite: Child must be potty trained and able to enter/exit the water independently and voluntarily. Child should be comfortable putting face in the water.

Program: BEGINNER BASICS

Class Name: Beginner Basic (age 5-9)

Age:  At least 5 years old – entering 1st grade in the Fall.  Strongly suggested that Kindergartners complete Preschool level(s) first.

Description: Teaching new swimmers water and fundamental safety as well as an introduction to front/back glides and floats, plus self-rescue techniques.

Details: Gives new swimmers the opportunity to become acclimated and comfortable in the water without a parent. Introduces basic self-rescue skills, breath control, floating, glides, front/back crawls, and safe water exploration while increasing independence in the water.

Prerequisite: Child must be willing to work in water without a parent. Also, must be willing to enter/exit the water voluntarily and allow body and head to get wet. Older students who need help overcoming anxiety/fear of the water should consider private lessons first.

Class Name: Beginner Basic (age 10-14)

Age: 10-14 years

Description: Introduction to the water and fundamental safety and aquatics skills. Also present students with self-rescue and basic strokes.

Details: Gives new swimmers the opportunity to become acclimated and comfortable in the water in an age appropriate environment.  Introduces basic self-rescue skills, breath control, floating, glides, and safe water exploration while increasing independence in the water.

Prerequisite: Swimmer must be willing to enter/exit water unassisted. Also, must be willing to allow body and head to get wet. Older students who need help overcoming anxiety/fear of the water should consider private lessons first

Class Name: Beginner Basic (age 15+)

Age: 15 & up

Description: Teaching new swimmers water and fundamental safety as well as an introduction to front crawl, back crawl, diving, and self-rescue.

Details: Gives new swimmers the opportunity to become acclimated and comfortable in the water in an age appropriate environment.  Introduces basic self-rescue skills, breath control, floating, glides, and safe water exploration while introducing more independence in the water.

Prerequisite: Swimmer must be willing to enter/exit water unassisted. Also, must be willing to  allow body and head to get wet. Older students who need help overcoming anxiety/fear of the water should consider private lessons first.

Program Name: BEYOND BASICS

Class Name: Beyond Basics (age 5-9)

Age: At least 5 years (entering 1st grade in the Fall) – 9 years

Descriptions: Using skills learned in Beginner Basics, children progress towards independence in the water.  Review glides, floats, and self-rescue skills while focusing on learning new skills: treading, diving, front/back crawl, breaststroke arms/kick.

Details: Goal for swimmers is to swim 25 yards with minimal assistance using front/back crawl. Expand knowledge on safety/pool rules and introducing breaststroke arms/legs and diving techniques.

Prerequisite: Child must able to exit water independently and submerge head/body under water voluntarily. Also, must know how to perform front/back glides and floats, as well as be familiar with motions used during front and back crawl.

Class Name: Intermediate (age 6-9)

Age: At least 6 years old (entering 1st grade in the Fall) – 9 years

Description: Continues to progress basic stroke techniques in front/back crawl, introduction to breaststroke, diving, and reinforcing water safety through rescue-skills.

Details: Goal is for swimmers to swim 25 yards independently. Learn open/flip turns plus proper techniques for diving and strokes, plus learn to tread water for 20-30 seconds.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 15 yards independently, do a front/back float unsupported, front crawl, and retrieve an object in chest deep water.

Class Name: Intermediate (age 10+)

Age: 10 and up

Description: Using skills learned in Beginner Basics, students progress their basic stroke techniques in front crawl/back crawl, breaststroke, diving, and reinforcing water safety through treading water and self-rescue skills.

Details: Goals for swimmers is to swim 25 – 50 yards (1-2 laps) independently. Work on perfecting basic stroke techniques in front/back crawl, breaststroke, while working on diving, flip turns, and learning butterfly kick/arms.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim independently 15 yards, do a front/back crawl unsupported, and retrieve an object in chest deep water.

Class Name: Advanced/Pre-Team

Age: At least 7 years old, entering 2nd grade in the Fall & up

Description: Focus is on stroke mechanics and refinement in specific areas.

Details: Introduces butterfly, breaststroke, sidestroke and reinforces water safety for self and others.  Great for swimmers interested in becoming part of the Tangy Tornadoes swim team, but would like evaluation &/or extra help prior to season start.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim front/back crawl independently for 25 yards and tread water for 1 minute.

Program Name: PRIVATE LESSONS

Age: 5 & up

Description: Private lessons can be reserved online one at a time or in greater quantities to reserve the time that’s most convenient for you.  Great options for swimmers who, among many things, wish to work though swimming anxiety, want extra help with a stroke/skill, or simply prefer a one-on-one experience.  The instructor will communicate with you in advance to prepare for lesson and tailor the lesson to suit student’s needs.  At this time, instructors will be assigned to private lessons based on availability.  If you wish to request a specific instructor, or if you have a student with special needs, please contact the swim lesson program manager.

Program Name: ADA Class (American Disabilities Act)

Age: For ages 3-10 years
Description: This semi-private class is available for special needs children looking to learn water/fundamental safety and aquatics skills. We will ask parents/caregivers to fill out a questionnaire after signing up, but prior to starting the class/lesson so the instructor can go over expectations and goals for the specific child during sessions.
Details: Many children with special needs such as: Down syndrome, Sensory Integration Disorder, Autism etc. take an interest in the water but are unaware how to swim safely. This class will be tailored to work with your child?s abilities, with a main goal of safe water exploration inside and outside of an aquatics environment. Visual aids, life jackets, water toys, etc. can be provided, if needed (with notice prior to class) to enhance any type of learning style for the child.
Prerequisites: All children must be able to enter/exit the pool physically and voluntarily.  (At this time we cannot accommodate swimmers who require use of a pool lift/chair) No prior swim experience is required. A parent/caregiver MUST be present during all sessions, but DO NOT have to get in the water if they do not wish to.
